"RON HOLLOWAY & FRIENDS-
         LIVE AT MONTPELIER"
"RON HOLLOWAY & FRIENDS - Live at Montpelier" is a dynamic, high energy recording, that employs two powerful rhythm sections, one acoustic, the other electric. It is a celebration of Ron's eclectic roots. Over the course of seventy-some minutes, the listener is treated to straight-ahead jazz, R&B, blues, funk, and a sultry ballad. However; don't be fooled-- the acoustic band serves up some nasty funk, and the electric unit delivers some serious hard bop!
Favorites like Lee Morgan's Sidewinder, and Herbie Hancock's Cantaloupe Island, receive decidedly Funk Jazz, and Soul Jazz interpretations, in the hands of the "acoustic group". By contrast; the "electric band" takes Miles Davis' All Blues into funky terrain, but deftly executes hard bop lines on top of the contemporary rhythms. This tune sums up how categories, along with textures, and stylistic interpretation get subtly blurred, over the course of this CD. Poinciana gets a latin-jazz rhythmic feel, with Holloway reminding us of his fondness for Sonny Rollins' full sound, and flexible phrasing. Chameleon is out-and-out explosive funk, that nearly blew the roof off the building!
Vocalist Julia Nixon's reading of At Last and Meet Me With Your Black Drawers On are simply sensational! The CD faithfully captures the phenomenally joyful quality of Black Drawers. In concert, the blues elicited tremendous, uninhibited cheers from the audience. This was indeed a memorable night for all in attendance, as was evidenced by the audiences standing ovation, at the end, and the beaming smiles on the faces of the musicians.

Maryland tenor saxophonist Ron Holloway has been delighting Montpelier audiences for many years. The strength and quality of his playing is universally recognized. In addition to playing in Dizzy Gillespie's Quintet from summer 1989, to early 1993, Holloway has also performed with many distinguished musicians, representing several genres of music. Sonny Rollins, Freddie Hubbard, Gil Scott-Heron, Little Feat, Taj Mahal, Shemekia Copeland, Delbert McClinton, Dr. John, Dr. Billy Taylor, Buddy Guy, Derek Trucks, Dorothy Donegan, Rootboy Slim, Osiris, and Eddie From Ohio, are just a few. Ron is the proud recipient of no less than 40 Washington Area Music Awards, two of them for Musician of the Year.
Ron's first CD, Slanted, was released in early 1994 on the Fantasy/ Milestone label. This was followed by Struttin' in 1995, Scorcher in 1996, and Groove Update in 1998. Recently asked about his future goals, Ron paused for a moment, and answered; "Among the many things I would like to do, is reflect the entire history of the tenor saxophone in my playing. The saxophone is a relatively young instrument, but what an illustrious legacy it has already. There's much to be done!"
